November 05 The Fourth Element: Passion‘The Fourth Element’ is an exhibition demonstrating the use of glass, gravity, heat and
the fourth element: passion.
The Exhibition is in the 'Showcase" at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Flinders Mall, Townsville is on From the 31 OCt to 19 Nov 2006. Opening Hours 10 - 5 Mon - Fri. 10 - 2 Sat & Sun.
I especially love the challenge of working totally in glass.
No simple brush stroke of paint to add detail….. To me, that’s the easy way out.
Everything in this exhibition was created from glass.
Be it hand-cut, shaped through a hot flame, or glass applied in chunks, frits or finely ground powder.
It's all 100% glass. Even the signage of “The Corner Shop” was created from glass.
The first step of glass fusion is where the glass is put into a kiln and heated ever so carefully
to about 800°C / 1475° F.
This can take 6 – 8 hours of heat to work the glass and over 24 hours to cool and anneal depending
on the size and thickness of the glass.
This is true for each trip the glass makes into the kiln.
The last kiln firing is done at a lower temperature to allow the fused glass to gently fall into
or over a shape I’ve hand formed … Ahh….the art of gentle persuasion.
Some of my creations have had over 4 kiln firings to create just the right result.
I've posted a couple of pics. Clck the photo button and check out the Fourth Element.
There will be more Pics to come very soon

Entry to the exhibitioin is free! Its well worth a visit to check out what the selected artisits using different mediums have created to tie in with the the 'Vestment' theme.
These annual themed exhibitions sponsored by PTRG are a fantastic opportunity to experiment with different techniques in my addiction ....kiln worked glass.
I've created a series of miniture wall hanging Kimonos using my favoutire medium. Miniture being 300 x 300mm or 1 foot squarish for non-metric people. I used 3mm thick glass with crushed and powdered glass to create a luxurious silky appearance immulating the traditional Kimono material of silk. Those of you that know my work will notice the switch from 6mm thick glass with many hand cut and shaped glass I typically use to create a scene or image. I'm particularly happy with the "Watercolour" Kimono with its watercolour effect.
See Kimonos exhibition in the photo album area. Please, keep in mind I am not a photographer!
